September 18, 2012 — Inpatient hospital treatment accounts for the largest proportion of healthcare spending in the United States, with the use of diagnostic imaging services such as magnetic resonance images (MRIs) frequently implicated as the probable cause. A new analysis finds that the biggest expense may not be from imaging technology, but from supplies including medical devices, such as stents and artificial joints.

According to a study in the September issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology, overall noninvasive diagnostic imaging (NDI) costs to Medicare Part B dropped 21% from 2006 to 2010. The study reveals that medical imaging is not a driver of escalating Medicare costs.

September 14, 2012 — IBA Molecular North America Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of PET imaging tracers, has announced the introduction of its Centers for Innovation, two unique facilities designed for advanced radiopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing. The centers are located in Totowa and Somerset, N.J. Complementing these sites are IBA Molecular's production capabilities for isotopes such as I-124, F-18, Zr-89 and in the future, Cu-64 and Y-86. The centers are expected to play an important role in the development of a new generation of disease-specific tracers and companion theragnostics.
