Watts Healthcare Corp. (WHCC), one of the largest healthcare providers in southern California, selected Novarad’s picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and radiology information system (RIS) for installation in its radiology department. WHCC is a federally-qualified community health center with over 96,000 patient encounters specializing in primary care services to residents of the South Los Angeles area.

August 19, 2016 — Early-stage breast cancer patients receiving a shorter course of whole breast radiation with higher radiation doses per fraction reported equivalent cosmetic, functional and pain outcomes over time as those receiving a longer, lower-dose per fraction course of treatment. These findings were derived from research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

August 19, 2016 — A new non-invasive positron emission tomography (PET) technique can obtain images of neuron proliferation in an area of the brain known to be particularly affected by depression. Scientists from the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technology (CLST) in Japan used the technique to observe this process, known as neurogenesis, in the subventricular zone and subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus.

The detonation of atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 resulted in horrific casualties and devastation.

Hitachi Asia Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. announced that Hitachi Asia has received an order for a proton beam therapy (PBT) system from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), including a 10-year service and maintenance agreement. It will be the first proton beam therapy system in Southeast Asia.

August 18, 2016 — A new technology harnesses imperfections that typically compromise magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams to create images resolved enough to enable consistent diagnoses across populations for the first time. These are findings of a study led by NYU Langone Medical Center and published August 16 in Nature Communications.

Neuroscientists peered into the brains of patients with Parkinson’s disease and two similar conditions to see how their neural responses changed over time. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Parkinson’s Disease Biomarkers Program and published in Neurology, may provide a new tool for testing experimental medications aimed at alleviating symptoms and slowing the rate at which the diseases damage the brain.

The U.S. healthcare industry has failed to create and sustain an efficient network for storing and sharing patient medical data, but a new proposed strategy could make the process easier and more affordable.
