Varian Medical Systems showcased the latest version of the Vitesse real-time treatment planning for high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy at the annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). This software will make it possible for clinicians to plan and perform high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatments accurately and quickly in the operating room using real-time ultrasound guidance, without moving the patient to a computed tomography (CT) scanner partway through the process.

Clinicians at the Harley Street Clinic in London are using the Calypso GPS for the body system from Varian Medical Systems to provide real-time tracking of tumors during prostate cancer radiotherapy treatments. The first such system to be installed in the United Kingdom, Calypso real-time tracking has been used to enhance the precision and quality of treatments for more than 20 prostate cancer patients at the clinic to date.

The collaboration covers the mutual marketing and representation of products for imaging and treatment in the global radiation oncology business. This collaboration further comprises the development of software interfaces between Siemens and Varian treatment systems. The two companies will also investigate opportunities for joint development of new products for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery.
