Based in Scottsdale, Ariz., SimonMed is one of the fastest-growing imaging groups in North America, having grown from a single imaging center to 68 locations in multiple states. A unique success story in today’s industry, approximately 100 radiologists operate under the SimonMed umbrella, reading between 800,000 and one million studies per year.
Playing a key role in SimonMed’s continued expansion has been Intelerad’s IntelePACS solution. Coupling IntelePACS’ scalability and performance in geographically-dispersed networks, IntelePACS enables SimonMed to leverage a single, centralized PACS that can be easily extended to new sites. This allows new acquisitions to leverage existing infrastructure, which greatly reduces IT costs and improves margins right away.
For SimonMed’s radiologists, IntelePACS drives performance through its speed of image transfer, functionality, and collaboration tools, allowing them to significantly raise their productivity while rapidly delivering high-quality reports.
“The success we’ve had with IntelePACS is demonstrated by the volume and velocity at which our radiologists can read while maintaining a high level of patient care,” said Joe King, director of IT, SimonMed. “In terms of productivity, we had a region with 11 radiologists using a competing PACS who were being out-read by one radiologist using IntelePACS.”

Intelerad Medical Systems launched its new Tomosynthesis Module. Integrated directly into Intelerad’s InteleViewer, the module eliminates the need for dedicated workstations, allowing practices to easily open new revenue streams, while enhancing radiologists’ workflows by allowing them to read tomosynthesis studies from their main workstation.
Westerners want neatly drawn lines, simple demarcations, absolutes. In some cases, the lines are apparent. Others are not. Continents are easy to distinguish visibly from oceans. The boundaries between countries are not.
As the radiology industry continues its conversion towards a value-based model, imaging enterprises are under increasing pressure to simultaneously raise their levels of quality and efficiency in order to remain competitive. In fact, regardless of how well they may be performing today, they must continually refine and improve so they can retain customers and attract new business in the future.
Based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Associated Radiologists LLP is the city’s largest provider of medical imaging services. Formed in 1946, the organization is made up of three clinics around Saskatoon, with a fourth clinic located about 100 miles north of the city in Prince Albert.
With 24 radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians on staff, Associated Radiologists reads over 350,000 studies per year and counts a number of hospitals as clients, including St. Paul’s and City Hospital in Saskatoon, and Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. Additionally, the organization reads for 30 rural hospitals.
Until 2009, all of the reads conducted at Associated Radiologists’ private clinics were done using film. As keeping up with the daily flow of studies became a daunting task, the decision was made to transition towards a digital environment.
From the start, Associated Radiologists benefitted tremendously from IntelePACS’ reliability and ease of use. Its Web-based architecture provides rapid access to current and prior exams and reports, but also increases the speed at which results are transferred to referring physicians, particularly those located in remote areas.
“We have cases where a patient has had an ultrasound done in a hospital 170 miles away and the report is in the referring physician’s office before the patient has left the hospital,” said Kelly Prodanuk, business manager. “The physicians frequently say, ‘How can they do that?’. It makes us look very good, that we can provide a high level of service in rural communities, which have struggled to get that kind of patient care.”

Founded in 2006, Partners Imaging Centers (PIC) is a seven?center radiology practice that reads 60,000 studies per year. Owned and operated by two founding-partner radiologists, the group’s network is based on the west coast of Florida and includes an MRI center, an MRI & CT center, a breast diagnostic center and four additional centers that offer four or more modalities.
The PIC relationship with Intelerad dates back to the earliest days of the practice in 2006, when its founders selected and deployed IntelePACS at the group’s single, initial location. In the years that followed, as PIC expanded operations both organically and through acquisition, IntelePACS easily accommodated the growth of the practice.
“Our radiologists can use IntelePACS in the same capacity from any of our centers or a remote location,” said Nigel de Wit, PIC chief operating officer. “This is a big advantage. It is one of the many reasons our radiologists are so positive about the solution.”
De Wit credits IntelePACS’ high performance as well as its easy-to-use, fully-featured viewer, InteleViewer, for driving the individual productivity of the six radiologists who serve all seven imaging centers. IntelePACS enables PIC to increase market share and remain competitive, despite fluctuating healthcare market conditions and ongoing cost-control pressures.
With financial constraints continuing to affect healthcare providers, there is a growing need for organizations to explore new means to generate revenue. For many imaging enterprises, the answer may lie in expanding their breast imaging services and incorporating leading-edge technologies like digital breast tomosynthesis – which can be done easier than previously believed. This is due to recently introduced software solutions, like Intelerad’s Tomosynthesis Module, which integrates directly into InteleViewer, thus providing the diagnostic tools that radiologists require and eliminating the need for costly workstations dedicated to the modality.
Imaging is critical to all medical specialties so it is logical that images should be available to specialists outside of radiology. There is a trend to reduce repeat exams by making images more easily accessible, including prior exams. This traditionally has been accomplished using the cumbersome process of mailing or physically carrying CDs to referring physicians. Often these CDs do not open or take a long time to download. Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements for certified electronic medical records (EMR) also call for the sharing of medical images electronically to help improve efficiency and reduce healthcare costs. All of these factors have given rise to remote image access systems.
Founded nearly 25 years ago and based in Cincinnati, ProScan Imaging is one of the largest privately held teleradiology companies in the world. ProScan provides teleradiology services for more than 300 locations across North America and around the globe. In addition, the company owns and operates 26 outpatient imaging centers in seven states, and WorldCare Clinical, which collects and assesses medical images in support of clinical research trials.
Founded nearly 25 years ago and based in Cincinnati, Ohio, ProScan Imaging is one the largest privately held teleradiology companies in the world. ProScan provides teleradiology services for over 300 locations across North America and around the globe, and owns and operates 26 outpatient imaging centers in seven states.
Due to historical efforts to accommodate both staff and customers, in 2004 the ProScan Family of Companies employed three different PACS solutions from three different vendors. This complex environment presented many technical and maintenance challenges, and required staff to be trained and proficient on multiple systems.
By replacing these multiple existing PACS solutions with IntelePACS in 2006, ProScan provided its thirty radiologists a single, easy-to-use, enterprise platform to drive performance across multiple sites. IntelePACS’ rich automated workflow features and the system’s high performance have greatly enhanced radiologist productivity, while playing a significant role in improving collaboration among the company’s highly trained and geographically distributed subspecialist radiologists.
“Using IntelePACS, I've been able to increase my productivity, probably in the 10 to 20 percent range,” said Malcolm Shupeck, M.D., a ProScan radiologist.
Intelerad’s architecture makes IntelePACS a portable solution, enabling ProScan’s radiologists to read studies from any location with the same superior user experience. This is especially important for radiologists who move between imaging centers during the course of a day, and when radiologists read studies from home for urgent case coverage.
