Today’s digital picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) is highlighted with several choice words around the industry: accessible, flexible, Web-based, thin client versus thick client and vendor-neutral. Whatever term is used to describe the PACS of today and the future, one thing is clear: the aim now is to be able to store medical images, sourced from any modality, in a secure location on a network and retrieve them for review from any platform or any device.
Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) has been providing pediatric healthcare services since 1904. Today, as part of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), it serves a metropolitan area of nearly four million people, and treats additional patients from across the province and beyond.
At MCH, leveraging technology and staying at the forefront of new technological developments is a high priority. This emphasis is central to the hospital’s dual focus on research and delivering superior clinical care in numerous specialty areas.
Deployed by MCH in 2004, IntelePACS has had an enormous impact on improving patient care, far beyond the obvious advantages of digital vs. film-based imaging. MCH has leveraged IntelePACS to implement a customized workflow that has transformed the way the radiology department operates, vastly reducing turnaround time and greatly increasing efficiency. Worklists automatically filter what an individual radiologist sees, presenting the highest priority items for attention first. Collaboration features enable peer consultation. Secure, web-based access makes the system available anytime, anywhere.
“In a hospital setting, time is of the essence,” said Lucia Carpineta, M.D., an MCH pediatric radiologist. “With IntelePACS, images can be read almost as they happen. In terms of report delivery, IntelePACS provides physicians with access to our audio recordings the minute we push the ‘close’ button.”

A rural community hospital located in northeast Oregon, Good Shepherd Medical Center is a busy 49-bed facility that serves the town of Hermiston and its surrounding communities.
Given their rural location, Good Shepherd is a heavy transfer facility located near the junction of two state highways and often the first stop for trauma patients from traffic accidents in the area. These patients, along with those who require specialized treatment or care for extended periods, are often transferred to larger facilities in Washington or Portland. For this reason, Good Shepherd required a solution that easily transferred images across multiple locations. With its Web-based, distributed architecture, Intelerad was able to meet the needs of the hospital, deploying its IntelePACS and InteleViewer solutions back in 2002.
With only one radiologist on staff at a time, diagnostic imaging staff must work as efficiently as possible to ensure patients receive the highest levels of care. To enhance productivity, Good Shepherd integrated IntelePACS with PowerScribe 360, Nuance’s dynamic radiology reporting and communication platform.
“The integration has dramatically cut down our turnaround time,” said Ann Richards, Good Shepherd’s HIS analyst and PACS administrator. “Whereas it formerly took anywhere between 12 to 24 hours to deliver a report, radiologists’ average turnaround time over the course of a week has been five and a half minutes. It’s been a dramatic reduction.”
