The Alliance for Proton Therapy Access has released a national report revealing the heavy emotional and financial burden that many cancer patients endure when trying to get their insurer’s approval for physician-recommended proton radiation therapy. The report – Cancer Care Denied: The Broken State of Patient Access to Proton Therapy – calls on insurance commissioners in all 50 states to adopt and enforce the principles of a Cancer Patients’ Timely Treatment Bill of Rights and hold insurers accountable for providing fair, timely and transparent access to cancer treatment.

Daniela Schmitt, Ph.D., took top honors in the overall category of the 2018 TROG Plan Study: Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) Brain, with a plan she created using the Accuray Precision Treatment Planning System. Schmitt, a medical physicist at Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany, developed a plan for delivery on the CyberKnife M6 System, a device designed from the ground up to deliver SRS treatments with precision and accuracy, and without an invasive frame.

Breast cancer survivors are not getting the recommended level of screening post-surgery, according to a newly-published study in JNCCN – Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The study was led by Kathryn Ruddy, M.D., MPH, director of cancer survivorship for the Department of Oncology, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.

A new statement from the American College of Radiology (ACR) asserts that provider non-compliance to lung cancer screening guidelines may be resulting in thousands of unnecessary deaths each year. The statement attributes the phenomenon to physician ignorance of lung cancer screening guidelines, lack of patient and physician education on the benefits of screening, and drastically low Medicare reimbursement for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening exams.
