NorthStar Medical Technologies LLC has received additional matching funds from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) for its accelerator method of producing the medical radioisotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99). The addition brings the total funding for the new method, in development by subisidiary NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes, to $11.1 million.

January 17, 2017 — James Laskaris, emerging technology analyst at MD Buyline, recently offered his perspective on five medical technology innovations that might be just months or a few years away.

Just a few years ago, minimally invasive surgery to treat serious conditions such as stroke and heart valve defects was unimaginable. But technology has brought us to the point where such patients can be treated quickly and safely through intravenous microsurgery, often walking around within hours and leaving the hospital in just a few days, Laskaris said.


On Dec. 8, 2016, a female patient in her 60s became the first in the Australia/New Zealand region to receive electronic brachytherapy to treat her skin cancer lesion, a basal cell carcinoma on her nose. Radiation Oncology Centres (ROC) physicians in Brisbane used their new Esteya electronic brachytherapy system from Elekta to deliver the patient’s first of six non-invasive treatments. Esteya is a form of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy that applies high-precision radiation therapy directly to the cancer site, reducing radiation to surrounding healthy tissues.

Accuray Inc. signed an agreement in December with Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH) for the acquisition of three Radixact Systems that will provide clinicians and their patients with access to the newest advanced radiation therapy. Of the three Radixact Systems, two will replace existing TomoTherapy Systems and one will be installed in a new bunker. The agreement also includes an upgrade of HKSH’s existing CyberKnife M6 System to include the latest features for motion management and treatment efficiency, and was entered into backlog during Accuray's second fiscal quarter that ended Dec. 31, 2016.
