June 15, 2018 —The Weight-Bearing CT International Study Group will host a scientific session on the benefits of weight-bearing extremity computed tomography (CT) exams on Thursday, July 12, in conjunction with the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) conference in Boston. Agfa announced that it has installed two DX-D 300 digital radiography (DR) solutions at the multi-office Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, Potomac Valley Orthopaedic Associates Division, in Maryland. The DX-D 300s are replacing a previous, early-generation DR system.

A recent survey of California women found that 95 percent of respondents want the state’s breast density inform law to extend beyond its current Jan. 1, 2019 expiration date. The survey, conducted by global nonprofit breast health organizations Are You Dense Inc. and Are You Dense Advocacy Inc., also found that nearly 75 percent of women know that dense breast tissue makes it more difficult to see cancer on a mammogram, suggesting the 2013 law has been effective in its aim.

June 14, 2018 — NeuroLogica, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., announced that Florida Hospital in Orlando, Fla., added the BodyTom Elite computed tomography (CT) scanner to their brachytherapy suite.

International Medical Solutions (IMS) recently announced that the American College of Radiology (ACR) added IMS' Educational Toolkit to the ACR technology portfolio that supports medical imaging education. IMS will provide an option to users of ACR Cortex that includes the ability to perform true DICOM viewing and engage in interactive, web-based assessments. The IMS toolkit will be utilized for projects that include resident training, CME, and other ACR educational programs throughout North America that involve a dynamic educational and assessment experience.

Hitachi Medical Systems Europe has been awarded the contract to supply six ultrasound systems as part of the RAPID program to improve prostate cancer diagnosis across South West London. In addition to the six high-resolution Arietta ultrasound systems, the contract also includes six BiopSee image-guided fusion biopsy systems from MedCom (for which Hitachi is a European distributor) to be installed at three major hospitals. Using the two systems together will allow providers to combine multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) data with real-time ultrasound, reducing unnecessary biopsies and providing accurate targeting while reducing the number of samples needed.

June 14, 2018 — The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has begun treating patients with Viewray's second-generation magnetic resonance (MR) image-guided radiotherapy system, the MRIdian Linac. Siteman is the first U.S. cancer center to offer cancer therapy with both MRIdian and MRIdian Linac.

Riverain Technologies announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded the company a broad patent for its artificial intelligence (AI) computed tomography (CT) technology. The technology in question forms a vessel suppressed, chest CT series using deep learning and synthetic data modeling. The company said the patent holds promise for improving the detection and diagnosis of lung cancer at an earlier stage while making clinicians more efficient, a first for computer-aided detection (CAD).
