April 20, 2007 - Clinicians at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland are using the 250 MeV Cyclotron, a new cyclotron from ACCEL Instruments GmbH, part of Varian Medical Systems, to deliver proton therapy treatments for a range of cancer patients.
The superconducting cyclotron is a dedicated proton source, supplying up to 250 MeV protons to the spot-scanning gantry for deep-seated tumor treatments. It reportedly provides more accurate treatments with fewer side effects and is designed for high-efficiency, low-energy consumption, high reliability and modern treatment features such as spot scanning, which reportedly enables highly effective proton dose distribution in three dimensions and beam-intensity modulation.
