February 29, 2008 – A record-breaking 28,400 people and 900 companies attended the 2008 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, FL this week, demonstrating the continuing growth of the Health IT industry.
Previously, HIMSS' most successful conference was in San Diego in 2006, where 24,870 healthcare IT professionals attended and 859 companies exhibited.
HIMSS officials say healthcare IT is a major issue worldwide and the organization believes its conference has helped further the cause, as the world’s largest IT conference. HIMSS says healthcare professionals are aware of the value of an electronic healthcare system, including reduced medical errors and lower healthcare costs. The organization says interest in electronic medical records, connectivity, wireless technology, mobile computing, and technology to help increase patient safety have helped drive more interest in the show.
The next HIMSS conference is planned for April 4-8, 2009, in Chicago. HIMSS says it has already reserved 83 percent of the space for its 2009 exhibition.
