February 27, 2007 – The Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently granted that The Joint Commission continue deeming authority under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), meaning laboratories accredited by The Joint Commission are deemed as meeting both CLIA and Medicare certification requirements.
The federal government’s Final Notice, granting the deeming authority for five years to The Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation Program was published in the February 2007 Federal Register.
