October 16, 2017 — A new report from medical imaging information technology (IT) and cybersecurity company Sectra shows in what areas of the diagnostic process radiologists themselves see the added value of machine learning. The report clearly shows more opportunities than threats.

The webinar "Pancreatic Cancer Outcome Highlights via On-table Adaptive MR-guided Radiation" was presented by Parag Parikh, BSE, M.D., associate professor of radiation oncology and biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, and Percy Lee, M.D., associate professor and vice chair of education for the Department of Radiation Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. They will share their ongoing experience in using MR-guided radiation therapy to treat pancreatic cancer.

The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) jointly announced a partnership to develop an ASE Echocardiography Module to expand ASNC’s ImageGuide Registry. According to a recent survey, participation in bundled payments has improved the quality of care, and anticipation and preparation for new programs remains high. The survey — conducted by Archway Health, a Boston-based firm specializing in managing bundled payments programs — assessed the perceptions and efficacy of bundled payments ahead of the expected announcement of a new bundled payments program from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the first 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device, more than doubling the static magnetic field strength available for use in the United States. The Magnetom Terra from Siemens Healthineers is the first 7T MRI system cleared for clinical use in the United States.

October 11, 2017 — Toshiba Medical’s Aplio i-series is a highly advanced ultrasound solution made up of Aplio i700, Aplio i800 and Aplio i900. All systems include iPerformance technologies that deliver extreme processing power and help healthcare providers to see and do more, according to the company. A new beam-forming technology, iBeam, optimizes efficiency of the beam, increasing resolution, and the systems offer advanced clinical applications, including an ultra-thin transducer (24 MHz).

In 2017, invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in about 252,710 women and 2,470 men in the U.S. and remains the second leading cause of death in women, according to the American Cancer Society. Advances in technology continue to become available to aid in the fight against breast cancer which can improve the chances of beating the disease. David Weintritt, M.D., founder of the National Breast Center and National Breast Center Foundation, recently identified the top three technologies impacting the future of breast cancer treatment to improve outcomes for women diagnosed with the disease.

October 11, 2017 — MR Solutions took their cryogen-free preclinical multimodality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) solutions on tour in September 2017. The company had exhibits at the 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Chapter of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (Sept. 11-13), and the British Nuclear Medicine Society’s autumn meeting (Sept. 15), both held in Liverpool.
