April 5, 2018 — Medical imaging company Brainomix has attracted £7m ($9.8 million) of investment to bring its artificial intelligence (AI) software for fast stroke diagnosis and treatment to the global healthcare market.

April 5, 2018 — Myriad Genetic Laboratories Inc. announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has granted manufacturing and marketing approval for Myriad’s BRACAnalysis Diagnostic System to be used as a companion diagnostic with the PARP inhibitor, Lynparza.  Lynparza is marketed by AstraZeneca and Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) issued an update to its clinical guideline for the use of palliative-intent radiation therapy for patients with incurable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Reflecting new evidence from randomized clinical trials, the guideline now recommends the addition of concurrent chemotherapy to radiation therapy for certain patients with incurable stage III NSCLC, including those who are able to tolerate chemotherapy and have a life expectancy longer than three months.

April 4, 2018 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Somatom Edge Plus computed tomography (CT) system from Siemens Healthineers with the FAST (Fully Assisting Scanner Technologies) Integrated Workflow with the FAST 3D Camera. The camera is the first patient positioning system powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Optical mammography (OM), which uses harmless red or infrared light, has been developed for use in conjunction with X-rays for diagnosis or monitoring in cases demanding repeated imaging where high amounts of ionizing radiation should be avoided. At the OSA Biophotonics Congress: Biomedical Optics meeting, held April 3-6 in Hollywood, Fla., researchers from Milan, Italy, will report an advance in instrument development that increases the sensitivity of OM by as much as 1,000-fold.

April 2, 2018 — GE Healthcare announced the sale of its Value-Based Care Division — including its software assets for Enterprise Financial Management, Ambulatory Care Management and Workforce Management — to private equity investment firm Veritas Capital. The sale, expected to be completed in third quarter 2018, was valued at $1.05 billion in cash.

Results from a recent prospective trial found the Wide Area Transepithelial Sampling with 3D Tissue Analysis (WATS3D) device increases the detection of both Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal dysplasia by more than 80 percent. Study results from the multicenter trial of more than 4,000 patients were published in the latest issue of United European Gastroenterology Journal and featured in the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)’s Scope Tech Talk video series.
