Award provides funding to improve or expand radiologic technologist safety

Applications Open for ASRT Foundation and Canon Medical's Safety FiRsT Grant Program

May 31, 2019 — The ASRT Foundation and Canon Medical Systems are now accepting applications for the 2019 Safety FiRsT grant program, an initiative that provides funds for radiologic technologists to improve workplace safety measures.

The Safety FiRsT program awards two American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) members a grant of up to $7,000 each for the implementation of a radiologic technology safety program or creative idea aimed at improving technologist safety. The winning facilities will then implement the program and share best practices.

In the past, winners have used the funds to promote radiologic technology safety through the purchase of safety systems including:

  • A vertical power lift device for use in a hospital setting;

  • Lead-free aprons that are lightweight yet provide more protection than standard lead-based equivalents; and

  • A ferromagnetic detection system for magnetic resonance (MR) safety.

Now in its fifth year, the Safety FiRsT program is helping healthcare facilities to create safer work environments for radiologic technologists. Eligible facilities are encouraged to apply by completing an application here. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2019.

The ASRT Foundation and Canon Medical Safety FiRsT grants are funded by a grant from Canon Medical.
