January 5, 2015 — Zelina Amir was the 1,000th patient to complete treatment at the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Somerset, New Jersey. Amir, who traveled to ProCure from Israel, was treated for a hemangioblastoma of the spine.
Proton therapy is a precise form of radiation that directly attacks tumors while minimizing potentially damaging radiation to surrounding healthy tissues and organs, and is beneficial for difficult-to-reach tumors and complex cases.
After getting in a car accident in 2006, a CT scan found a small tumor in Amir's spine, but it was recommended at that time that it not be treated by any means due to its sensitive location. In 2011, Amir was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was then discovered that her hemangioblastoma tumor had grown larger and now mandated treatment. Since 2012, Amir has had five surgeries on her spine, only for the tumor to grow back. Amir’s doctors in Israel told her about proton therapy and ProCure, feeling strongly that it was the key to her recovery.
Studies have shown proton therapy to be effective in treating many types of cancers, including tumors of the brain, gastrointestinal system, head and neck region and prostate, as well as sarcomas and most pediatric cancers. The precision of proton therapy makes it especially effective for treating children and adults with anatomically complex tumors, such as tumors that are inoperable, located at the base of the skull, or along the spinal cord.
