October 23, 2007 – The Xiotech Corp. today said the University of Florida Jacksonville Physicians Inc. (UFJPI) purchased a Xiotech Magnitude 3D 3000 storage area network (SAN) system to store all of its data, including electronic medical records and scanned copies of paper financial records.
UFJPI is a support organization for the University of Florida College of Medicine. UFJPI handles support operations, patient billing and scheduling for the University of Florida’s 32 specialty and family practice clinics in northeast Florida and southern Georgia as well as several ambulatory clinics at Shands hospital in Jacksonville, FL.
Implemented in July, the new system provides UFJPI with a combined iSCSI-Fibre Channel SAN, featuring Xiotech’s storage virtualization technology to complement the organization’s new VMware ESX Server implementation. The fully virtualized environment delivers easier storage and server management, in addition to improved performance, flexibility and resilience of core applications, such as UFJPI’s electronic data management system (EDMS), which tracks and stores all patient billing information.
Prior to the new Magnitude 3D 3000 storage system, the organization’s electronic medical records and data reporting were located on servers with direct-attached storage. UFJPI said this provided little scalability, while making data management complex and time consuming. When UFJPI began digitizing previously paper-based financial documents - a 32 million-image project - the IT organization realized a larger, more manageable storage system was needed.
“We were running out of electricity and cooling in our server room and wanted to consolidate our servers with VMware ESX Server, which requires a SAN,” said Dave Larsen, IS manager, UFJPI. “After looking at several vendors and speaking with other organizations similar to ours, we were confident that Xiotech’s virtualized storage, ease of management and seamless integration with ESX Server would be the best match for our VMware environment. Additionally, we feel Magnitude 3D 3000 is the right platform to support our disaster recovery program as the next phase of the project.”
