April 30, 2008 - The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) are partnering to create standardized data for surgical care in the U.S, aiming to reduce the amount of time and resources needed to implement electronic health records (EHRs).

The two organizations are pairing to create the Standardized Perioperative Record (SPR), a collaborative electronic record set that includes all of the data elements currently captured by paper perioperative records, and is compatible with existing EHR systems. The SPR will create automated data collection for pre-surgical, surgical and recovery care, resulting in “evidence-based” medicine, whereby best practices based on real-world data are shared among AORN members. SPR data will be converted into to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices, and aligned with other clinical, regulatory and accreditation standards, including NSQIP, SCIP, CMS Pay for Performance, and reporting requirements. In addition, the SPR can be modified as it is used based on feedback from AORN members, creating an adaptive record-keeping system that reportedly meets the need of surgical departments across the country.
