January 3, 2011 — As part of a new program, qualifying schools of radiologic technology will receive a complete, full-featured Exam-PACS application free of charge, as well as access to the cloud-based Exam-Vault Quad-Redundant Archiving system for radiology instructional images and related data.

CoActiv's donation program for qualifying educational institutions with accredited radiologic technologist training programs has already been tested with several RT programs, including Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and Bergen County Community College in New Jersey.

In addition to Exam-PACS and access to the Exam-Vault system, the colleges also will receive complimentary system setup and instructor training, as well as access to required hardware at cost. All radiologic technology students and instructors at participating schools will have their own Exam-PACS log-ins entitling them to unlimited use of the system throughout their association with the school.

With the Web-based platform and cloud-based offsite image storage, students and faculty will be able to view their images from any Internet-enabled PC, whether in the classroom, dorm room or home.

While most radiologic technologists in training do work hands-on with some modalities and with image phantoms in an imaging lab, they often are not trained in some advanced image processing applications, such as picture archiving and communications system (PACS) techniques. Students can benefit when their lab work involves the IT applications that they may use in future jobs.

Exam-PACS is a Web-based enterprise PACS that includes image analysis tools and built-in 3-D processing to streamlined image communication beyond the enterprise. It supports a full range of modalities, including new techniques such as breast specific gamma imaging (BSGI). In addition to image storage, it manages a wide range of related patient information.

The new radiologic technologist donation program will be rolled out on a state-by-state basis, beginning in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
