June 8, 2009 - SIIM established the Samuel J. Dwyer, III, PhD, FSIIM Memorial Lecture, and to celebrate the session the society featured distinguished speakers in Dr. Dwyer's areas of expertise and interest on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at SIIM 2009.
This lecture named in Dr. Dwyer’s honor was designed to acquaint attendees who never had the pleasure of meeting Dwyer with his history and the accomplishments of his career.
The first part of the lecture focused on Dr. Dwyer’s interest in standards for the format and information content of digital medical images. The second speaker elaborated on the original Dwyer storage model, its impact on PACS hardware and software, and how the evolution of storage has affected the way PACS storage is implemented.
The final section described early contributions to the field of digital medical imaging and the process of developing a comprehensive SIIM bibliography and repository on the history of imaging informatics.
