May 7, 2009 – McKesson announced today that Maria Parham Medical Center of Henderson, N.C., has implemented Horizon Medical Imaging picture archiving and communications system (PACS), which is part of a larger healthcare IT investment and lays the foundation for an electronic health record (EHR).

The EHR also includes access to patient images and reports at remote-care facilities and throughout the 102-bed acute-care hospital. The medical center’s investment in IT resulted in an extremely well-organized and professional department that worked closely with McKesson’s implementation team to enable a go-live with their integrated RIS/PACS in less than 45 days. Additionally, the medical center is live on McKesson’s Paragon HIS and is implementing Paragon’s suite of clinical systems. The IT staff also is deploying McKesson’s document imaging system to review, analyze, code and complete electronic patient records.

“We are a small community hospital, but we have an image and information volume of a hospital twice our size,” explained Randy Williams, director of information technology at Maria Parham Medical Center. “Our market is continually changing, and we needed a healthcare IT strategy that included a flexible, scalable PACS to meet these demands and enable us to provide the greatest level of physician and patient satisfaction. McKesson’s disruption-free implementation eased user adoption, and its superior solution in terms of value, functionality and integration with our core solutions helps ensure we are prepared for the next level of healthcare delivery.”

Previously, technologists, radiologists and physicians had difficulty accessing the radiology results and mammograms performed each year. Radiologists had to retrieve archived images and load them to various, modality-specific workstations for comparing and reporting studies. Without integration to the hospital information system, radiologist productivity and workflow were affected, and physician satisfaction was negatively affected.

With the integrated McKesson solutions, Maria Parham can provide access to medical images and reports as part of the enterprise-wide EHR. With anywhere access from any location, workstation or desktop, physicians no longer experience delays waiting for patient information that may delay patient diagnosis. As a result, physician referrals are up, but most important the hospital reports that patient care and safety are enhanced.
