March 12, 2009 - DR Systems have taken four new orders, including two data migrations from legacy PACS, totaling almost $1.57 million.

The four facilities are: Hillsdale Community Health Center (Hillsdale, MI), Salem Clinic, P.C. (Salem, OR.), Contemporary Imaging Associates (Livonia, Mich.) and Advanced Radiology Imaging Associates (Fort Myers, FL). The largest contract was for nearly $544,000, with the smallest at about $154,000.

Data migrations from legacy PACS are a part of Hillsdale Community Health Center and Contemporary Imaging Associates contracts. At Contemporary Imaging, the legacy PACS was a homegrown system.

Data migration involves the transfer of historical exams from a previously used PACS onto a newly acquired PACS. The migration of radiological images can be particularly complex because of the size of image files. The size of the archive to be migrated generally encompasses tens of terabytes, and commonly takes from several months to more than a year to transfer from one PACS to the other. Complications can arise if the PACS systems cannot “talk to each other” easily, for reasons such as use by one or both vendors of non-standard or proprietary data storage schemes. DR Systems reportedly uses sophisticated software tools, overseen by in-house experts, to execute data migrations. Many other vendors, by comparison, require manual manipulation of the data and file transfers facilitated by a third-party contractor. DR Systems’ approach aims to dramatically reduce the time required for a migration, save money and minimizes human errors. For example, one migration managed by DR Systems took just three weeks and encompassed 36,000 exams.
