June 4, 2007 - The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM - formerly SCAR), in support of its mission to provide research and education in imaging informatics, has announced offerings related to its Annual Meeting, publications, and an imaging informatics professional (IIP) educational initiative.
For the fifth year, SIIM will host a one-day pre-conference symposium for IIPs prior to the SIIM 2007 Annual Meeting, June 7-10 in Providence, R.I. The Imaging Informatics Professional Pre-conference Symposium takes place June 6, 2007, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. This year's course is designed to assist individuals who are interested or plan to take the forthcoming Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) exam. The first test is scheduled to be administered in September 2007 by a new, separate organization, the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII). Presenters will focus on topics included in the CIIP Test Content Outline, and will also direct participants to a "roadmap" of additional IIP educational sessions of interest within the SIIM Annual Meeting.
SIIM provides several publications and resources to assist professionals working in the growing IIP field as well as those preparing for the forthcoming certification exam: the SIIM/SCAR University Digital Medical Enterprise Primer series; a special supplement to the Journal of Digital Imaging with references and reading lists for IIPs preparing for certification; and the Imaging Informatics Administration Symposium Course Syllabus. Finally, the SIIM Expert Hotline provides answers and a wealth of information on several hundred PACS and digital imaging questions.
To address the continuing educational needs of the IIP community, SIIM has organized an Education Advisory Network (EAN) comprised of SIIM members who are leaders in the field of imaging informatics education from throughout the United States and Canada. It is a subcommittee of the SIIM Education Committee. The EAN is designed as a forum for the exchange of information and to facilitate collaboration in the development of educational criteria and curricula for the imaging informatics administration profession. Participating organizations are interested in ensuring that their education efforts are correctly aligned with an independent, open and comprehensive curriculum and that they are aligned with the standards and test content outline created by the CIIP certification exam committee. A working group of the EAN, composed of George Bowers, Lorraine Ramsay, Mark Struthers, and Len Avecilla have formulated a preliminary position statement and summarized the EAN's initial objectives, based on the EAN's first discussions.
