Varian Medical Systems’ exhibit at the 2006 ASTRO meeting focused on the clinical deployment of the company’s technology for advanced radiotherapy, with a special emphasis on the On-Board Imager device for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Earlier this year, the company announced that it had shipped more than 250 On-Board Imager devices to cancer clinics around the world, and that more than 60 percent of all new machine orders now include this important accessory for imaging, tracking and targeting tumors.
The On-Board Imager (OBI) offers three imaging modalities that make it possible to pinpoint the exact location of the targeted tumor every day prior to treatment; note any changes in tumor size, shape, or position; and track tumor motion in order to enhance treatment precision.
