August 16, 2023 — In a recently published news update, the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) reported on highlights and newly-appointed leadership updates from the SBI 2023 Symposium, held in National Harbor, MD. A snapshot of significant updates from that event, as reported in an SBI online update of the 3-day event held in May, follows.
Symposium Program Chair and newly-elected SBI President Mary “Mimi” Newell, MD, FSBI, oversaw the first in-person meeting of the organization in four years. Newell is Assistant Director of Breast Imaging and Professor at Emory University School of Medicine. As noted in the SBI news update, “The Symposium was designed to cover scientific data and expert practices for navigating workplace challenges in a rapidly shifting society, and ways that all radiologists can do their part in issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion.” Programming focused on system-related processes, practice-level infrastructure, as well as individual radiologist self-reflection, according to the SBI Symposium online highlights summary.
Martin Yaffe, PhD, FSBI, CM, FRSC, opened the event with a presentation that shared key historical trials in breast cancer screening as well as important progress to date, with an eye toward emerging science and technology.
The keynote address was presented by Cleveland Clinic’s Jame Abraham, MD, FACP, who is a professor at the Cleveland Clinic College of Medicine, speaking on “Insights on the In Situs.”
Sessions throughout the Symposium focused on the science of breast imaging, the evolving role of artificial intelligence, health equity, as well as diversity and inclusion.
Linda Moy, MD, FSBI, NYU Grossman School of Medicine Professor, NYU Langone Health, offered insights and practical information on breast imaging AI, helping participants with ways to integrate the technology into screening workflows and stressing the importance of determining whether these tools are right for their particular practice.
Additionally, an overview of upcoming updates to the ACR BI-RADS Atlas was presented by Wendy DeMartini, MD, Stamatia Destounis, MD, and Jessice Leung, MD.
