November 12, 2007 - Smart Medical Technology Inc. today was awarded a five-year contract with Novation for its inflatable mat Liftaem safe-patient-handling system.
Novation is a leading healthcare contracting services company of VHA Inc. and the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), two national health care alliances. The agreement makes Liftaem available to more than 2,500 healthcare organizations, effective Jan. 1, 2008.
Liftaem enables healthcare professionals to easily transfer a patient from a bed to a stretcher or other surface on a single-patient-use inflatable mat - even when the patient weighs up to 1,000 lbs. It is the only product of its kind featuring single-patient-use mats, which prevents cross-contamination.
The inflatable Liftaem mats are placed on the patients’ beds when they are admitted and remain with them for the duration of their stay. Carts used for inflation are placed throughout the hospital in areas with high numbers of patient transfers.
Smart Medical Technology developed the Liftaem to address the serious problems associated with manually lifting, transferring and repositioning patients. Nurses lose a combined average of 750,000 work days each year as a result of back injury, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
