RSNA 2023 kicked off on Nov. 26, welcoming attendees and exhibitors back to another year of showcasing new trends and technology in the field of radiology. This year's conference featured five days of educational programs for radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiologic technologists and allied healthcare professionals. RSNA 2023’s Technical Exhibits covered 364,000 square feet and featured nearly 700 exhibitors—including 124 first-time RSNA exhibitors —demonstrating the latest medical imaging technologies in CT, MRI, AI, 3D printing, and more.

Daniele Niewind demonstrated the new Exa Connect cloud-based automated revenue collection and prior-authorization workflow solutions at RSNA 2023. Exa Connect is fully automated, so there is no need for staff to implement or manage this capability – it is simple and seamless to launch Exa Connect into existing clinical workflows. Guillermo Sander, PhD, showcases Konica Minolta's new long panel detector at RSNA 2023. According to Sanders, the panel pretty much works with any system. The panel is particularly useful for imaging cases involving scoliosis and the spine. It is lower dose, enabling the technologist to take just one image instead of stitching. Anthony Tardi, global head of imaging for Siemens Healthineers, demonstrates the new Ultrasound Maple ultrasound system, which made its debut at RSNA 2023. Powered by Acuson technology from the company’s established portfolio, the Acuson Maple is designed for the clinician who needs a workhorse ultrasound system that supports a diverse range of ultrasound use cases. Lightweight, portable, and battery-powered, the Acuson Maple is ideal for emerging markets, small hospitals, outpatient centers, private practices, and urgent care centers. At RSNA 2023, Siemens Healthineers introduced the recently FDA cleared PET CT scanner called the Biograph Vision X. The company reports that it has drastically increased the approved time of flight, and offers 20% performance improvement boost throughput. You can learn more about this launch here.

The Siemens Healthineers SOMATOM Pro.Pulse expands clinical reach of signature Dual Source technology, high-end dual source CT, and presents a new Dual Source computed tomography (CT) scanner that is more accessible for smaller and rural facilities as well as outpatient diagnostic centers. Siemens Healthineers explained that theranostics is an innovative concept of personalized therapy that focuses on both the accurate selection of patients and providing them with targeted radioligand therapy to improve their prognosis. Theragnostics hs become much more mainstream in the last 12-18 months, and many companies exhibiting at RSNA 2023 were talking about it.

At Agfa’s Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) booth, radiology professionals discovered intelligent radiography powered by the MUSICA Acquisition Workstation, the digital nerve center of every Agfa digital radiography (DR) system.

Many of RSNA 2023's educational sessions were housed in McCormick Place's East Wing. Here are some of the educational program's highlights.

The first BlueSeal MR Mobile unit, developed for outpatient radiology and oncology solutions provider Akumin, debuted on the show floor at RSNA 2023. With more than 600 systems installed globally, the MRI scanners are equipped with Philips’ BlueSeal magnet technology that saved more than 1.5 million liters of helium since 2018. The extension of this breakthrough technology in a mobile unit means Philips will be able to expand quality access to MRI exams for more patients in more places, in a more sustainable way with helium-free operations. Unlike conventional MRI magnets, which typically require around 1,500 liters of liquid helium, a Philips BlueSeal magnet only needs to be pre-loaded with 7 liters, providing a major advantage in terms of up-time and costs. BlueSeal MR Mobile can also connect  to Philips Radiology Operations Command Center (ROCC) a multi-vendor, multi-modality, virtual imaging solution, which securely connects technologists with remote imaging experts in real-time using audio, video, and peer-to-peer text chat capabilities. Read more about this mobile MRI technology here.

Philips HealthSuite Imaging is a cloud-based next generation of Philips Vue PACS, enabling radiologists and clinicians to adopt new capabilities faster, increase operational efficiency and improving patient care. HealthSuite Imaging on Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers new capabilities such as high-speed remote access for diagnostic reading, integrated reporting and AI-enabled workflow orchestration, all delivered securely via the cloud to ease IT management burden. Some of the biggest news for Philips Healthcare at RSNA 2023 centered around ultrasound. John Aleshire, General Imaging Product Application Specialist at Philips, demonstrated the company's telemedicine solution, Collaboration Live on the Affiniti system. It allows the radiographer performing the exam to live stream the exam being performed to a position anywhere with Internet, whether it be their reading from home, reading from like an office maze, or working with somebody on the other side of the country, you can watch this exam being done performing real time.

Philips launched three new fit for purpose MR Smart Fit coils at RSNA23, as demonstrated by Kevin Hsu, senior marketing manager. The new ultra-light weight coils provide exceptional flexibility, significant reduction in patient setup time and optimization with Philips’ SmartSpeed AI solution, which allows for better image quality resolution and improved diagnostic confidence for healthcare providers. Philips and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) announced initial results of a research collaboration to decarbonize the health system’s radiology department. The project, which was initially announced in March 2023, shows that sustainable initiatives can reduce carbon footprint by nearly 20%, and reduce ownership costs by nearly 20%, while also allowing for improved patient care. With cardiology being one of the most demanding clinical workflow environments, this integration would begin with a focus on the cardiology care pathway and GE HealthCare’s CardIQ Suite, a workflow which leverages Deep Learning to automatically identify the presence and location of coronary artery calcifications and provide a total and per territory score within seconds of loading. GE HealthCare recently received U.S. FDA 510(k) Clearance for the new version of Digital Expert Access with remote scanning, the first remote patient scan solution with 510(k) Clearance. Digital Expert Access enables the sharing of expertise, best practices, and in-the-moment advice, as well as real-time, remote console control. At RSNA23, GE HealthCare introduced SIGNA Champion – a new MRI system designed to enhance the standard care of MRI exams for patients everywhere by democratizing advanced AI and innovative features to help enable faster and more precise MRI scans. 

Theragnostics was a key buzzword at RSNA23. GE HealthCare’s next-generation StarGuide SPECT/CT system uses the latest digital technologies to help clinicians improve patient outcomes in bone procedures, cardiology, neurology, oncology, and other medical specialties. 

RamSoft discussed its new patient app Blume, which gives access to images and reports, self scheduling, appointment reminders and electronic forms. 

Enlitic showcased a suite of groundbreaking tools that leverage the latest AI-driven data models. 

At RSNA23, Donald Boshela, CT product manager at Fujifilm, introduced the FCT iStream, the company's its new compact, 128-slice CT system, the FCT iStream.

The Fujifilm Essentia FS, introduced at RSNA23, is a complete and compact digital radiography floor mounted system featuring a 10-inch graphic display at the tube for convenient positioning information at the patient’s side. The Essentia SA is an ultra-compact straight arm system, designed for a wide range of standing, sitting and recumbent radiographic exams. 

Shawn Etheridge, executive director, modality solutions marketing at Fujifilm Healthcare Americas, introduced the Aperto Lucent Plus in the Fujifilm booth. MR imaging technology from APERTO Lucent Plus is based on a permanent magnet system providing a 0.4T static field strength and a space-saving, patient-comfortable gantry design.

Intelerad offered RSNA23 attendees a more in-depth look at its AI-enhanced solutions, which offer the best of both worlds – access to regulatory-approved AI algorithms and the flexibility to choose an AI vendor without being concerned about compatibility. Intelerad vendor-neutral solutions provide clients with workflow-complementary access to a wide and growing range of advanced AI algorithms.

Infinitt discussed its enterprise imaging solutions with attendees during RSNA23. 

4DMedical, a global technology company and producer of advanced lung function imaging software received U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its CT-based ventilation product (CT LVAS). CT LVAS, designed for use with computed tomography scans, joins 4D Medical's XV LVAS imaging software cleared for use with fluoroscopy in the United States. 

ClariPi showcased its ultra-low dose, AI-powered CT image denoising solution at RSNA23. 

Eizo showcased its control room monitor solutions at RSNA23.

The American Society of Radiation Technologists, ASRT, was well-represented at RSNA 2023, sharing its resources, certification and other educational programs. 

ITN’s Managing Editor captured a rare sight early on day one of RSNA 2023, as this became the traditional hot spot for capturing classic individual and team images throughout the week which gathered colleagues from across the globe.

RSNA 2022-2023 President Matthew A. Mauro, MD, FACR, FSIR, FAHA, focused his Nov. 26 Opening Ceremony Presidential Address on the theme of RSNA: "Leading through Change," focusing on five core principles of leadership during the well-attended first Plenary session of RSNA 2023.

The RSNA 2023 Gold Medalists and other distinguished honorees were acknowledged during the Opening Plenary Session by Matthew A. Mauro, MD, FACR, FSIR, FAHA, UNC School of Medicine - Radiology, during his Presidential Address and recognized in a private luncheon later in the week.

 

Alan H. Matsumoto, MD, University of Virginia Health, introduced RSNA 2022-2023 President Matthew Mauro, MD during the Sunday, Nov. 26 Opening Ceremony and Plenary Session.

The President of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, AAPM, Ehsan Samei, Duke Biomedical Engineering, shared updates and insights into the mission of its members during the Opening Plenary Session on Sun., Nov. 26 during RSNA 2023. AAPM boasts 10,000 members from 96 countries, 35 headquarter team members, 40 board members, 400 committees and 5 councils working to advance human health through physics.

This stage in the Arie Crown Theater of Chicago’s McCormick Place, shed a light on dozens of leading global experts in radiology throughout the 109th Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, RSNA 2023. Always a standing room only crowd watched and learned from the organization’s president on leading through change to a visionary healthcare futurist, highly-regarded experts in artificial and human intelligence, the radiology workforce and the always-popular Radiology Jeopardy, among other sessions.

Senta Berggruen, MD, FSAR, President of the Chicago Radiological Society, and Vice Chair for Education and Diversity, and Professor, Department of Radiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, welcomed the audience of RSNA 2023 attendees to Chicago and reinforced the meeting’s theme, “Leading through Change,” before introducing Plenary Lecturer Howard Chrisman, MD, President and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Professor of Radiology and Surgery, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Stopping by the Radiology Health Equity Coalition booth during RSNA 2023 proved valuable in learning about the organization’s efforts to build collaborative partnerships across the medical imaging community from Team Lead Carla Brathwaite, who shared the 2022 RHEC Annual Report.

Riverain Technologies drew much attention during RSNA 2023, including a discussion on the newest use cases for its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-empowered platform in lung scanning, as learned by Imaging Technology News' Managing Editor during an interview held with CEO Steve Worrell.

Presenting the very latest on “AI in Breast Imaging” the first day of RSNA 2023 were: Connie Lehman, MD, PhD, FACR, FSBI, Mass Gen Brigham/Harvard Medical School, was joined by Etta D. Pisano, MD, FACR, American College of Radiology (ACR) Division of Cancer Prevention/Chief Research Officer, along with Fredrik Strand, MSc, MD, PhD, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden during a packed early Sunday morning session.

The pioneering work of Dr. Fei-fei Li, Stanford 's Human-Centered AI Institute (HAI) and the team behind AlexNet and others who were significant contributors to the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, was highlighted during one of the first sessions at RSNA 2023, held Sun., Nov. 26, by Connie Lehman, MD, PhD, FACR, FSBI, Mass Gen Brigham/Harvard University, a presenter and moderator of "AI in Breast Imaging" which offered the very latest clinical trial findings and regulatory updates

During an RSNA 2023 session on day one, Connie Lehman, MD, PhD, FACR, FSBI, of Mass Gen Brigham/Harvard, provided a thorough historical overview of key milestones in the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence in imaging.

To a packed session on day one of RSNA 2023, Etta D. Pisano, MD, FACR, American College of Radiology (ACR) Division of Cancer Prevention/Chief Research Officer, provided attendees with the latest in FDA approvals and regulatory issues impacting radiologists and software vendors.

During a presentation on BIRADS 6th edition updates, Stamatia Destounis, MD, FACR, of Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, led a panel providing a status report on changes expected to be implemented by the end of 2024.

Breast imaging leaders working with various committees on the BIRADS 6th Edition updates continue to develop updated language and guidelines, according to presenters who offered a status report during a highly-anticipated session during RSNA 2023. 

Lars Grimm, MD, MHS, FSBI, Duke Radiology, was joined by Bethany Lynn Niell, MD, PhD, Moffitt Cancer Center, and Nisha Sharma, MBChB, FRCR of Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust in discussing ways to reduce overtreatment in early stage breast cancer during RSNA 2023.

David Lai shares the latest advancements and partnership updates from ClariPi during a demonstration of the ClariCT denoising solutions offered to ITN's editorial team during RSNA 2023.

The Discovery Theater hosted an informative question and answer session with the RadioGraphics Trainee Editorial Advisory members at RSNA 2023.

Amazon Health Chief Medical Officer, Vin Gupta, MD, MPA, MSc, a practicing pulmonologist at University of Washington Medical Center and UW Dept. of Health Metrics Sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), shared insights into “The Key Trends Shaping the Future of Healthcare Delivery” in the Plenary Session on the third day of the RSNA 2023 Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting.

The RSNA 2023 plenary session featuring Elizabeth S. Burnside, MD, MPH, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was dedicated to the memory of James E. Youker, MD, an accomplished leader and researcher in radiology who led the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Radiology for 45 years.

A compelling and forward-thinking plenary session, "Leading through Technology: Valuing Artificial and Human Intelligence,” was presented by Elizabeth S. Burnside, MD, MPH, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, who offered leadership insights for radiologists during RSNA 2023.

GE HealthCare Chief Technology Officer, Taha Kass-Hout, MD, MS, captured an engaged audience in the Innovation Theatre during an RSNA2023 discussion of how the company is applying a range of AI-enabled solutions toward healthcare’s digital transformation.
