The PET imaging market is experiencing double-digit growth, according to a report by IMV Medical Information Division. The study, which surveyed 1,725 hospitals and other sites with PET/CT and PET scanners as well as nuclear medicine cameras with coincidence detection, found that PET studies increased by 60 percent in 2003 to reach a 26.5 percent annual growth rate between 2003-2005.
PET/CT eventually outpaced PET in installations, as “90 percent of the units installed in 2005 were PET/CT scanners,” said Lorna Young, senior director, Market Research at IMV. “PET/CT scanners have become the preferred technology for PET imaging as the integration of the functional PET images with the anatomical visualization of CT has allowed more accurate and faster diagnosis,” Young added.
