April 10, 2007 - The number of U.S. radiation oncology sites that perform image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) in their department has risen from 15 percent in 2004 to over one-third, using either a dedicated IGRT imaging device or electronic portal imaging, according to a recent report by the IMV Medical Information Division.
The report, IMV's 2006 Radiation Oncology Market Summary Report, also indicated that ultrasound, x-ray and CT are the primary imaging modalities used in IGRT. The study also highlighted trends, such as 90 percent of the radiation therapy sites use networks for sharing images used in treatment planning; CT simulators comprised over 80 percent of the simulators installed in 2006; sites having budgets of $1.5 million plus have increased from 15 percent of 2003 capital budgets to 33 percent of 2007 budgets; 85 percent of the sites indicated that they have management systems installed.
