A dictation and speech recognition application that allows the use of back-end and front-end speech recognition on one single license, Crescendo Systems Corp.’s MD Center-XL, allows physicians to switch between the two modes without having to exit the dictation application and log on again.
In the front-end mode, voice commands give physicians hands-free control over the application. If they have to interrupt the correction process, they can save ongoing work for later completion or simply decide to send the report to transcription. In the back-end mode, the process is transparent to authors who may not even be aware that speech recognition technology is being used. Once the physician has finished dictating, recognized text is produced in the background and sent to the transcriptionist for correction. After a job has been sent off to transcription, it is still possible to edit it using voice commands. Automatic template fill-in further accelerates medical documentation.
