August 15, 2007 - The National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) held their Annual Meeting from Aug. 6-9 in Boston, MA, at which AAASC exhibited with the goal of interacting with state legislators and their staff and educating them on the benefits of ASCs and the importance of physician ownership.
For the last two years at the meeting, AAASC has joined other medical specialty societies, including the College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO-HNS), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) under the collective name "Physicians Advocating for Patients."
This relationship has reportedly been very successful for AAASC, and the promotion of physician led ASCs, resulting in increased networking and better collaboration on important legislative and regulatory issues with the specialty societies both at events like NCSL and through the year on issues that arise in individual states.
In addition, state ASC Association leaders attended the NCSL Meeting, helping to increase the industry's credibility among state-elected leaders and reinforcing the benefits of working with the other specialty societies on state issues. The ASC State Association leaders provided elected officials a fresh insight on issues such as certificate of need (CON), physician ownership, and worker's compensation reform along with the economic and quality of care values of ASCs.
