The digitization of medical imaging at hospitals has come a long way since the early picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) of the 1990s, according to Eric Rice, chief technology officer for Mach7 Technologies. With more institutions investing in electronic medical records (EMR) and Meaningful Use criteria driving the push toward even better management and storage of patient images, the enterprise imaging strategy has evolved into a vital necessity for many healthcare organizations. This involves the handling of images not only across certain departments, but also across entire hospitals and healthcare networks. The value of developing an enterprise imaging strategy is inherent to any organization, said Rice, whether they are in the process of implementing their EMR platform or looking for ways to optimize it.
In today’s healthcare environment, longstanding, volume-based models of healthcare delivery are giving way to models where payers are tightening their purse strings and putting a greater emphasis on treatment value. Medical imaging providers are increasingly looking for a strategy to streamline workflows, enhance referral networks, increase referrals and better manage imaging appropriateness. Advanced interoperability is that strategy.
Despite recent challenges and leadership changes, Merge, according to providers, is performing stronger than ever before. This is according to the newly released KLAS report, Weathering Change: Merge Healthcare Imaging Suite 2014.
HIT Application Solutions announced a partnership with Merge Healthcare Inc. to integrate its Notifi platform with Merge RIS, a Meaningful Use (MU) outpatient radiology information system. The solution, to be marketed as Merge Notifi, will initially automate appointment reminders and make patient results available through messages for Merge customers. Merge Notifi is a HIPPA compliant service.
Merge Healthcare Inc.’s radiology solutions have been certified for Meaningful Use (MU). Merge PACS, iConnect Access and Merge RIS are all now Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB) certified under the 2014 criteria.?
Several industries have used cloud solutions for many years, but cloud computing only recently started to be used in healthcare. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), cloud computing is defined as “a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.”1 As more and more healthcare organizations (HCOs) adopt electronic medical records (EMRs), the cloud database has offered an efficient solution for image sharing, particularly in radiology where it is bridging the gap between referring physicians and radiologists.
Merge Healthcare is showcasing its new universal viewer solution at Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting (RSNA 2013) in Chicago.
Today’s remote viewing systems will stimulate changes and challenges in healthcare in a manner similar to what online banking has done for the financial industry. The areas of improvement include safe, secure, remote access from any browser, or ultimately any mobile device. This is the reality of today, and it comes without the need for special applications or image and associated data downloads from virtually any source.
