May 1, 2014 — Nuance Communications announced the immediate availability of the Nuance PowerShare network, the industry’s largest cloud-based network for securely connecting healthcare professionals to share essential medical images and reports as simply as people exchange information using social networks. The PowerShare network promotes fully informed and connected physicians and patients who instantly view, share and collaborate while addressing patients’ healthcare needs.
Reporting is one of the areas in medical imaging informatics that has advanced the most in recent years. With much of the imaging workflow now digitized and carried out through second-, if not third-generation image and information management systems such as picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) or radiology information systems (RIS), the ”third pillar” of the end-to-end digital imaging workflow has grown less isolated and more influential than ever before — signaling the advent of true voice-enabled and speech-driven radiology reporting.
Value-based healthcare is pushing radiologists to deliver the highest quality of care while optimizing time and processes. At RSNA 2013, Nuance will showcase its latest version of PowerScribe 360 — a radiology reporting and communication platform. Powerscribe 360 version 2.0 offers new features like the 99 percent accurate Dragon Medical 12 speech recognition engine, as well as automation tools that increase data accuracy and the speed at which an actionable, structured report is completed.

If you missed seeing Watson (IBM’s artificial intelligence computer system, capable of answering questions posed in natural language) on the television show Jeopardy! last year, he outplayed, outlasted and outperformed his game show counterparts, besting his nearest challenger by $53,147. And while winning a game show is not quite the same as accurately diagnosing and treating a patient, the potential opportunities and applications of Watson in healthcare, and in radiology specifically, appear bright.
November 30, 2011 –Nuance Communications announced that 20 of the Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities, as recognized by Health Imaging & IT magazine, use radiology solutions from Nuance. In addition to this group, leading healthcare organizations, including Mercy Health Partners, Memorial Health, Ohio State University Medical Center, Sutter Health, University of New Mexico Hospital, UPMC and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have partnered with Nuance to drive significant improvement across their radiology workflow.
From my observations, one of the most challenging “best practices” is standardization. In radiology, standardization can be seen in modification to dictation and/or reporting style.
The use of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other high-tech diagnostic imaging (HTDI) scans increased 8 percent a year from 2003 to 2006 in Minnesota. There was concern that this potential overuse could expose patients to unnecessary radiation, plus contribute significantly to unsustainable increases in healthcare costs.
