Four major computed tomography (CT) system manufacturers in the United States recently released new systems in the past year featuring innovative scanner technology to reduce radiation dose, boost image quality and to be mindful of the current conservative economic climate in healthcare. GE, Siemens, Philips and Toshiba all released their next generation CT systems, each offering significant advances over technology these vendors previously offered.
With concerns about radiation dose and reducing unnecessary imaging scans, advances in computed tomography (CT) systems have brought about technologies such as iterative reconstruction software, intraoperative capabilities and dose-tracking software. In addition, recent studies on the use of CT on select patient populations and the modality’s benefits in detecting certain cancers are showing that the risks of CT imaging can go both ways. While CT exams can add to a patient’s lifetime exposure to ionizing radiation, they can also be more beneficial in cases where magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound might not be able to detect early-stage cancers. Some of these trends in utilization indicate that appropriate low-dose CT imaging will be key across patient populations.
Neusoft Corporation announced that it has signed a Term Sheet with Philips on the proposed transaction of shares and assets in Philips and Neusoft Medical Systems Co. Ltd. ("PNMS"). According to the Term Sheet, Neusoft's wholly owned subsidiary Neusoft Medical System Co. Ltd. and its overseas associates intend to acquire 51 percent equities in PNMS held by Philips. Upon the completion of the proposed transaction, all intellectual property rights of PNMS will be shared by both Neusoft and Philips. In addition, a team of approximately 100 to 150 computed tomography (CT) system and component engineers and supporting staff will transfer from the joint venture to Philips.
