Researchers from the Netherlands recently completed a study that explored the variation between radiologists when judging breast density visually on serially-acquired mammograms, and whether an automated density assessment would provide better consistency. Results of the study, “Consistency of breast density categories in serial screening mammograms: A comparison between automated and human assessment,” recently published in the Breast Journal, suggest that an automated computer measurement, VolparaDensity, provides better consistency than density readings performed visually by radiologists.

Gamma Medica announced that Henry Ford Health System (Detroit) has purchased Gamma Medica’s LumaGEM Molecular Breast Imaging system. The system is set to be installed by the end of 2016 at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. The MBI technology will be offered as a secondary screening and diagnostic tool following X-ray mammography, particularly for women with dense breast tissue. This will help improve cancer detection in women who are at greater risk of developing breast cancer.
