August 22, 2023 — The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) announced the recipients of awards of distinction and new Fellows recognized during its Annual Meeting, SIIM23, at the Austin Convention Center recently held in Austin, TX.
The Society's mission focuses on advancing medical imaging informatics field across the enterprise by fostering education, research, and innovation in a multi-disciplinary community. The annual event gathered the enterprise imaging community to recognize the achievements of its diverse membership, according to a statement issued by the Leesburg, VA-based organization, which also noted highlights and awards, summarized below by the ITN editorial team.
New College of SIIM Fellows Honors were awarded to:
- Sylvia Devlin, MS RT (R)(M)(QM), CIIP, FSIIM, Director of Clinical Platform Services, Radiology Partners
- Marc Kohli, MD, FSIIM, University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging
- Alexander J. Towbin, MD, FSIIM, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging
- Kevin O’Donnell, MASc, FSIIM, Canon Medical Research
The new Fellows, whose accomplishments reflect the highest SIIM standards, were inducted into the SIIM College of Fellows at the SIIM23 Opening General Session.
Honorary Awards
The 2023 Dwyer Lecture, Changing the Face of Healthcare Informatics, was awarded to Teri M. Sippel Schmidt, MS, FSIIM, Adjunct Professor at College of Engineering, Marquette University, and Johns Hopkins Medicine
The Annual Dwyer Lecture features a SIIM Fellow as the presenter of a particularly relevant and insightful topic in honor of Samuel J. Dwyer III, PhD, described by SIIM leadership as the humble, prolific pioneer of digital medical imaging.
Individual achievements were recognized in the field of medical imaging informatics through the following Honorary Awards:
The Gold Medal of the Society Award was presented to Eliot L. Siegel, MD, FSIIM, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Gold Medal is the highest award the Society bestows, awarded annually in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in research or implementation of imaging informatics applications.
The Dr. Joe Gitlin Award was awarded to Keith J. Dreyer, DO, PhD, FSIIM, Massachusetts General Brigham Research Institute. This honor is presented in recognition of outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of imaging informatics through the development of innovative, high-impact solutions.
The Dr. Ruth Dayhoff Award for the Advancement of Women in Medical Imaging Informatics was presented to Mindy L. Yang, MD, SimonMed Imaging. Awarded annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of imaging informatics by a woman or presented to a woman dedicated to the advancement and promotion of women in imaging informatics.
The Imaging Informatics Innovator Award was received by Satish E. Viswanath, PhD, Case Western Reserve University and Larry Sitka, MS, of PaxeraHealth.
The Innovator Award recognizes extraordinary achievements in informatics technology development that show strong promise or potential impact in Imaging or medicine.
SIIM's 2023 Early Career Achievement Award went to Paul H. Yi, MD, University of Maryland School of Medicine and Alex Barrington, MS, American College of Radiology (ACR), in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions in imaging informatics to someone whose highest earned degree has been awarded within 10 years of the date of nomination.
The Educator Award was presented to Arjun Sharma , MD, Suburban Radiologists and Prasanth M. Prasanna, MD, University of Utah Health Services Center on behalf of the SIIMcast Team. This award is given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to imaging informatics education by a SIIM instructor or educator in the field.
Scientific Awards
Using a peer review process, the following scientific awards were presented for outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging informatics:
Best Scientific Paper Award was presented to Bardia Khosravi , MD, MPH, MHPE, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Mayo Clinic, for “High-Fidelity Conditional Pelvis Radiograph Generation with Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models.”
The Roger A. Bauman, MD Award was received by Mana Moassefi , MD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Mayo Clinic, for “Generating Barrett’s Esophagus Digital Pathology Slides Using Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models.” SIIM’s update noted that this is awarded for the best student paper, and named to honor Dr. Bauman's distinguished career in radiological informatics research and practice and his status as Founding Editor of the Journal of Digital Imaging.
The Helen and Paul Chang Foundation New Investigator Travel Awards are awarded to new investigators with an area of study in imaging informatics who either are currently in a full-time training program or have completed their training program within 2 years of the SIIM Annual Meeting. They were presented to the following:
