April 17, 2023 — A review of the extensive program schedule for the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Global Conference and Exhibition, HIMSS 2023, being held April 17-21 in Chicago, makes it clear that artificial intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are poised to play an increasingly large role in healthcare moving forward.

They will detail how TVH, a 75-physician multi-specialty group in Central Florida, operating under value-based care (VBC) model (full-risk capitation), was able to identify previously hard-to-access clinical attributes buried in their electronic medical record (EMR) in at least 15% of its senior patient population. In addition to better care, this generated $2.5M in net new revenue from improved coding.
“Building America’s Healthiest Hometown with Natural Language Processing” — with Kevin Agatstein and Dr. Lowenkron on Wednesday, April 19, at 9:45 a.m. (CT) at the Innovation Hub Stage, Tradeshow floor. They will detail how TVH captures patient attributes from their structured EMR data and unstructured medical notes at scale. By solving critical technical, clinical, and workflow challenges, The Villages Health with KAID Health demonstrates how health systems today have already realized the promise of NLP to improve hierarchical condition category (HCC) coding and quality score in tandem.
Doctor vs. AI: Clinical Natural Language Processing for Preoperative Care — Join Kevin Agatstein and Dr. Gabriel, on Thursday, April 20, from 3:00-3:30 p.m. (CT) at the McCormick Center, South Building S104. They will cover peer-reviewed research, “Doctor vs. AI,” that was led by Dr. Gabriel at UCSD’s Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Perioperative Informatics. This session will detail how KAID Health’s natural language processing (NLP) engine significantly aligned with the clinician reviewers in completing a preoperative checklist and identified 16.6% of instances where the anesthesiologist did not find the presence or absence of a specific condition. The most common conditions the NLP pipeline captured that the anesthesiologist did not include cardiac arrhythmias, angina, anticoagulation, and neuromuscular disease.
