Recipients of a range of prestigious awards presented by RSNA during its 2022 Scientific Session and Annual Meeting were announced by RSNA President Bruce Haffty, MD, MS, in his Nov. 27 Plenary Session Presidential Address.

During the first Plenary Session of RSNA 2022, which featured an address by RSNA President Bruce Haffty, MD, MS, and AAPM President JD Bourland, PhD shared the importance of the association’s long-standing partnership with RSNA.

A long-time colleague of RSNA’s President, Sung Kim, MD, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, introduced Bruce Haffty, MD, MS during the Nov. 27 Plenary Session, recognizing his distinguished service in radiology.

Reinforcing the value of imaging and the vital role of radiologists in advancing patient care was a key message shared by RSNA President Bruce Haffty, MD, MS during the Nov. 27 Plenary Session, which set the tone for the hundreds of programs, educational and Plenary sessions presented daily during the entire 5-day event. 

Focusing on radiologists’ role in communicating with patients for better outcomes was Elizabeth Morris, MD, of UC Davis Medical Center during a Plenary Session which followed the RSNA 2022 Presidential Address during the Opening Session on day one of RSNA 2022.

A Monday morning program at RSNA 2022 provided significant findings from a host of radiologists from around the world on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI). The Science Session with Keynote:  Breast Imaging, “Breast Screening with AI — An Update” was moderated by Wendy Demartini, MD, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Christoph I. Reed A. Omary, MD, Radiology Chair at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, focused on sustainability and lowering radiology’s impact on the environment in a Fast Five session where panelists predicted where radiology will be in five years.

A historical review of radiology kicked off an engaging Fast Five Session, “How your life will change in the next five years” presentation by Donald Resnick, MD. 

A panel of supportive and experienced radiologists participated in the popular “Mentorship, Sponsors and Coaching: Not Just Early Career” session, moderated by Cheri L. Canon, MD, FACR with panelists Scott Cameron, MD, Lucy B. Spalluto, MD, MPH, and Jay R. Parikh, MD. 

One of many intriguing and visionary Plenary Sessions was presented by Reed A. Omary, MD, Chief of Radiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who challenges his audience to consider ways to support patients, as well as communities and the planet in their daily lives. 

Focused on specific steps radiologists can take to reduce their impact on the environment, Plenary Session presenter and Vanderbilt University Radiology Chair Reed A. Omary, MD shared his vision of climate action in radiology.

The RSNA Resident and Fellow Committee hosted a panel discussion on successfully bringing work to publication. Attendees learned from RSNA Publication Editorial Board members on preparing a submission, selecting the best journal, navigating the review process, avoiding common pitfalls, and more.

Results of a study on the effects of Long COVID were presented in a Scientific Session in the Learning Center Theater by Sean B. Fain, PhD, Univ. of Iowa, on Nov. 29 during RSNA 2022. 

Results of a study involving Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI in COVID survivors were shared in a Scientific Session by Peter D. Caravan, PhD, Co-Director of the Institute for Innovation in Imaging (i3) at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. 

Pulitzer Prize-winning author, renowned oncologist and RSNA 2022 Plenary Session speaker, Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, delivered a captivating presentation on Nov. 28 to a packed audience of attendees.

The mission of the RSNA was ever-present throughout the 108th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting, including this illuminated sign near the Discovery Theater.

The Discovery Theater was a popular stop for RSNA 2022 attendees, whether for a lunch-time jazz session or any of the many programs it housed. At the time this photo was taken, the only sound in the large room was the music. Clearly, a welcomed reprieve for attendees.

A top To Do for RSNA 2022 attendees was a stop at Chicago painter, muralist and fine artist Nate Baranowski’s 3-D mural where radiologists took the opportunity to pose for pictures commemorating their annual meeting experience.

With over 900 scientific papers presented during the meeting, the RSNA Daily Bulletin staff did an amazing job sharing the enormous volume of valuable information in print and online.

Part of the popular AI Showcase at RSNA 2022, an Imaging Artificial Intelligence in Practice (IAIP) demonstration on Nov. 29 helped radiology professionals understand how to introduce and scale AI into their practices, with an interactive exhibit and case studies explained by residents, including Alysha Dhami, MD, Stanford University School of Medicine.

During an Imaging AI in Practice (IAIP) demonstration, radiology residents such as Madhavi Duvvuri, MD, MPhil, UCSF Medical Center, described the case of a fictional patient through a real-world scenario involving many steps in the radiology workflow where AI can assist the radiologist and improve the efficiency and quality of care.

Attendees of RSNA 2022 surely know this is a rare sight, taken after a late-day session, as this sign has become a popular photo-taking attraction for attendees during the 5-day annual meeting which had nearly 38,000 attendees this year.

The Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) 108^th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting (RSNA 2022), held in Chicago’s McCormick Place from November 27 to December 1, highlighted the latest in medical imaging research and education and emphasized the importance of empathy, diversity and equity in health care. The meeting’s theme was “Empowering Patients and Partners in Care.” As the world’s largest radiology forum, RSNA 2022 featured more than 900 scientific papers in 19 subspecialties, more than 1,300 scientific posters, over 300 education courses and more than 1,450 education exhibits. Registration for RSNA 2022 was nearly 38,000.

RSNA 2022’s Technical Exhibits covered 364,000 square feet and featured 644 exhibitors—including 124 first-time RSNA exhibitors—demonstrating the latest medical imaging technologies in CT, MRI, AI, 3D printing, and more.

Attendees lining up to take their picture with the RSNA logo was a welcomed sight, not seen for several years due to the pandemic. 

As the world’s largest annual medical imaging forum, RSNA 2022: Empowering Patients and Partners in Care provided attendees with a standout exhibition floor, featuring the latest medical imaging technologies in CT, MRI, artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing, and more.   

New this year, RSNA 2022 hosted “Last Call in the Exhibit Halls” on Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. During this free social event, participating exhibitors will be serving refreshments at their booths, as attendees take one last walk around the technical exhibits to network and celebrate a successful RSNA 2022. 

The Technical Exhibits Hall was open Sunday, Nov. 27, through Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Even Iron Man made an appearance at RSNA22 this year in the Iradimed booth, which was showcasing its lightweight 'point of care' monitor, which was engineered to meet the needs of today’s complex MRI workflow. From bedside through transport, the 3880 non-magnetic vital signs monitor is mountable anywhere: wall, roll-stand, bed rail, or anesthesia cart and can quickly be detached for immediate mobility. IRadimed 3880 provides MRI safety and full functionality in a compact, non-magnetic package. 

“RSNA 2022 will be the top event of the year to learn what’s new in the field of medical imaging,” said John P. Jaworski, C.E.M., RSNA assistant executive director of Meetings & Exhibition Services, in a written statement. “With over 600 exhibitors confirmed, including 87 first-time exhibitors, RSNA 2022 will be even larger than last year’s meeting. Attendees will be able to see, touch and experience new products and solutions, as well as network with experts from across the globe. Those who cannot join us in Chicago can engage with RSNA exhibitors via RSNA 2022 Virtual Access.” 

“The robust attendance numbers demonstrate that people still want the valuable interaction and networking experiences that a meeting like ours provides,” said RSNA Executive Director Mark G. Watson, in a written statement. “We are proud to be able to offer our attendees an exciting in-person experience, as well as virtual access to nearly 100% of all meeting content. With in-person and virtual programming across a broad spectrum of topics, plus an unrivaled medical imaging technical exhibition, RSNA 2022 truly has something for everyone.”

RSNA22 regained a sense of normalcy this year, with registration reaching nearly 38,000.

An informational update from Bracco’s management team revealed details of its Nexo Dose and Global Dose Registry. At RSNA22, Bracco Diagnostics Inc. also announced results from a recent online survey of 200 radiologists. In issuing its findings, the company reports that over half (53%) of radiology professionals responding saw an increase in MRI procedures over the last year, and another one in two (55%) have concerns about the availability of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures.

At RSNA22, Konica Minolta Healthcare announced the launch of two new products, the KDR Flex Overhead X-ray System, pictured here with its flexible configuration, and the AeroDR Glassless Flat Panel Detectors. The company’s Dynamic Digital Radiography (DDR) technology will be available on the KDR Flex and DDR was recently FDA-cleared as an option on the mKDR Xpress Mobile X-ray System.

Guillermo Sander, Director of Digital Radiography at Konica Minolta Healthcare, demonstrates the mKDR Xpress at RSNA22. The system is portable, making it easier for the technologist to acquire a good image with a minimum amount of effort.

Sectra’s enterprise imaging solution, as demonstrated here, provides a unified strategy for all imaging needs while lowering operational costs. The scalable and modular solution, with a VNA at its core, spans radiology, pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology and orthopedics.

During the Philips Healthcare Virtual Roundtable during RSNA22, Kees Wesdorp, Chief Business Leader, Precision Diagnostics, talked about the growing need for sustainability in healthcare. Here, Philips introduced its next-generation Advanced Visualization Workspace platform with AI-enabled algorithms and workflows. This latest innovation is vendor-neutral, providing a single, advanced platform for multiple modalities across cardiology, oncology, neurology, and radiology with a comprehensive suite of advanced visualization solutions to support care teams, and tailored to fit the needs of any hospital network, from a single workstation to an enterprise solution.

Dr. Lawrence Tannenbaum, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of radnet Inc, a leading provider of diagnostic imaging centers in the US, discussed his useage of the Philips Imaging Orchestrator – ROCC (Radiology Operations Command Center),  to connect it systems and technologies across your network enable you to improve quality and consistency, and ensure the provider is delivering on the fundamental principle of getting the exam right the first time. ROCC is a vendor-neutral, multi-modality, multi-site telepresence solution provides advanced tele-acquisition capabilities and seamlessly connects imaging experts at a command center with technologists at scanning locations across an organization. 

At RSNA22, Siemens showcased 3 works-in-progress, including the MAGNETOM Terra.X 7T MR scanner. The 7T MRI scanner for diagnostic imaging and is designed for unprecedented breakthroughs in clinical care. 

At RSNA, Philips introduced its next-generation Advanced Visualization Workspace platform with AI-enabled algorithms and workflows. This latest innovation is vendor-neutral, providing a single, advanced platform for multiple modalities across cardiology, oncology, neurology, and radiology with a comprehensive suite of advanced visualization solutions to support care teams, and tailored to fit the needs of any hospital network, from a single workstation to an enterprise solution.

In May, the Philips MR 7700 3.0T MR system received FDA clearance, and was featured on the show floor of RSNA22. This latest break-through MR innovation from Philips delivers unmatched performance and precision for both research and advanced clinical diagnostics, helping to address the Quadruple Aim. MR 7700 expands scanning capabilities with a fully integrated multi-nuclei imaging and spectroscopy solution to explore new clinical pathways, without sacrificing clinical imaging workflow or wide-bore patient comfort, to enhance the experience of both staff and patients.

Philips announced the global launch of a next-generation compact portable ultrasound solution at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting. The new Compact 5000 Series aims to bring the diagnostic quality associated with premium cart-based ultrasound systems to more patients. Designed for portability and versatility without compromising image quality or performance, the Compact 5000 series facilitates first-time-right ultrasound exams for more patients.

As demand for minimally invasive surgery continues to grow, GE Healthcare is committed to helping clinicians use image guidance technologies to their full potential by removing barriers in order to provide quality care to patients for better clinical and operational outcomes. The new Allia Platform represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration with interventionalists and surgeons with the goal of enhancing user experience, improving workflow efficiency, and increasing the adoption of advanced image guidance in daily practice - all important factors in today’s constrained healthcare environment.

GE Healthcare has been recycling iodine-based contrast media for European healthcare facilities since 2006, but it’s begun to expand its geographic reach. The recycling program initially launched in Norway, where GE Healthcare’s Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) facility in Lindesnes produces iodine contrast-media products. GE Healthcare now offers this recycling program in 11 European countries, and last year expanded it into Canada and the United States.

Agfa's RSNA22 booth featured its new messaging, "Agfa HealthCare: That's life in flow," and also gave attendees a preview of its new Work in Progess, the Agfa EI Agility Network (enterprise imaging).

Carestream’s DRX-LC Detector, not yet available for commercial sale, captures long-bone and spine images with a single exposure, making it ideal for pediatric imaging and long-bone and spine images of people with limited mobility. It is designed with X-Factor so the detector can be shared across different Carestream X-ray systems and is compatible with both rooms and mobile units. 

Bayer’s next generation CT technology, the MEDRAD Centargo CT Injection System (Centargo), was on display at RSNA22 and is 510(k) pending. It is designed to drive workflow efficiency with design features that work in conjunction with Bayer's portfolio of products to bring innovative technology to the imaging suite and introduce new technology in the areas of patient set-up.

Calantic Digital Solutions is Bayer's new cloud-based platform providing AI applications integrated into the clinical workflow of the radiology department. Details on Bayer’s Calantic SPARK, a new accelerator program for medical imaging app developers to further foster innovation in radiology AI, were presented in the AI Showcase Theatre at RSNA22.

Fujifilm’s ECHELON Synergy System is part of its next-generation MRI line. It features smart single-touch on gantry controls and has an AI driven reconstruction.

Merative, formerly IBM Watson Health, was reintroduced earlier this year as a standalone company. CMO David R. Gruen, MD, MBA, FACR, talked with the ITN editorial team about the company’s direction, and trends in the imaging space. “One of the big trends I’m seeing is that there is really a crisis of radiologists; there is just not enough of us to get the work done,” he said. “And so we need to think about this as an industry—what we do how we do it. We're not looking for more machinery to take care of more patients because we don't have the people to actually push the buttons on a scanner. My whole life we (as an industry) have tried to figure out a way to get more people through our system and added machines to do that. But, we can't buy radiologists. I think one of the major themes is that we, the industry, are looking for technology solutions that we can invest in to help with the problem. We kind of anticipated this happening, but not to the extent that it's panned out. So what are the workflow solutions? We need smarter workflows and we need to move to the cloud so that we can look at images wherever we are, wherever they are.”

Canon's Managing Director for MRI, Mark Totina, reviews the highlights of the Vantage Galan 3T SP for ITN editors during RSNA22. 

Canon's Automation Platform is an AI-based, zero-click solution that uses deep learning technology to streamline workflow for fast, actionable results. At RSNA22, Matthew Walker, managing director of Canon's HIT business unit, highlighted its features for ITN editors.

Moin Hussaini, managing director of X-ray for Canon, gave ITN editors an overview of the Canon CXDI-Elite during RSNA22. The CXDI-Elite series is Canon's first digital X-ray imaging system to utilize Built-in AEC Assistance technology designed for general X-ray imaging. 

At RSNA22, Bill Newsom, Canon's managing director for its vascular business unit, showcased the cardiovascular side of Canon's range, including the Aplio i-series Prism Edition. 

New at RSNA was Philips AI-powered MR SmartSpeed designed to increase speed, image quality, and productivity and drive diagnostic confidence with improved image resolution via the AI reconstruction algorithm. It utilizes Philips’ state-of-the-art speed engine and an award-winning AI reconstruction technology delivered at the source of the MR signal to ensure no data loss.
