October 23, 2019 — At the 2019 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting, Sept. 15-18 in Chicago, Advanced Radiation Therapy, makers of AccuBoost, announced the latest upgrades to the AccuBoost Digital platform. AccuBoost Digital leverages the Planmed Clarity digital mammography system to provide doctors with real-time image-guidance and targeting confidence in the delivery of accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) in patients opting for breast conserving therapy (BCT). These upgrades improve the treatment workflow, patient experience and user interface. By design, this non-invasive breast brachytherapy (NIBB) technique is 100 percent adaptive as each treatment fraction is assessed independently and is ideal for the challenges that APBI treatments can present.
Adaptive therapy allows doctors the ability to alter the treatment plan based on tumor bed and anatomical changes as presented each day at the time of treatment. With AccuBoost Digital, doctors can locate the tumor bed in real time, and adjust the field size, shape and position as needed, while minimizing dose to a patients’ heart, lungs and healthy tissues.
“If breast cancer patients could talk to their peers that are about to embark on a course of radiation therapy, they would readily be sold on AccuBoost. It is such a well-tolerated procedure. AccuBoost is the only option that we offer for APBI,” said Leann Smith, M.D., radiation oncologist at Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma in Lawton, Okla.
