Portable system uses deep learning technology to provide improved bladder volume measurement accuracy

Verathon Introduces BladderScan Prime Plus Portable 3-D Ultrasound

November 16, 2017 — Verathon Inc. announced the launch of its new portable 3-D ultrasound instrument, BladderScan Prime Plus. Powered by ImageSense artificial intelligence (AI), BladderScan Prime Plus provides exceptional accuracy, according to the company, with enhanced, point-and-click ease of use.

The second-generation ImageSense algorithm in Prime Plus combines clinical data from thousands of scans and tens of thousands of ultrasound images with deep learning technology providing bladder volume measurement accuracy of ±7.5 percent on volumes from 100-999 mL and ±7.5mL on volumes from 0-100mL. This accuracy performance is a significant improvement compared to previous BladderScan products across all patient modes, and is 33 percent better than published comparable bladder volume measurement devices with ±10 percent or ±10 mL accuracy, according to Verathon.

The simple, intuitive design of BladderScan Prime Plus significantly improves on the ease-of-use of BladderScan Prime. Included among the key usability improvements are:

  • One-mode scanning for all patient types;
  • Point-and-click use — ImageSense, combined with VMode automated 3-D volume acquisition, requires no manual probe fanning, minimizes user error and optimizes clinical workflows;
  • Improved BladderTraq aiming assist and new visual/color cues to indicate proper aiming; and
  • Durable medical-grade design and simplified cleaning for real-world use and compliance with hospital disinfectant standards.

The company also announced that the Prime Plus software upgrade will be made available free of charge to existing Prime customers upon request.
