July 28, 2014 — Norvision announced the successful implementation of the Norvision Skylite In-ceiling Video-wall. Installed in Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center's radiation rooms in Gilbert, Ariz., the recessed ceiling screens project calming imagery and serene videos to patients receiving radiation therapy.
"This is the first time this has been done in radiation therapy rooms," said Don May, vice president at Norvision. "The system helps patients endure the often tedious and stressful radiation treatments. It's a beautiful system. The screens are recessed into the ceiling, giving it a natural sky-light look-and-feel."
Installing the screens challenged Norvision’s engineering team. Standard electronics and LCD screens fail in the radiation-rich environment. The solution was to recess and protect building-block style MicroTiles, manufactured by display company Christie Digital. Norvision developed a tablet app to manage the content.
The process for the patient is simple. Upon entering the radiation therapy room, the patient selects scenes from a digital media library. Once the treatment begins, hospital technicians start the content loop via a wireless tablet. Content is automatically updated by adding media to cloud-based storage systems such as Dropbox or Goggle Drive.
