RAD Technology Temporary Radiotherapy Vault TRV Radiation Therapy

March 7, 2014 — Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center is announcing the installation of a linear accelerator. This technology, which exceeds any capabilities currently available in the state, will replace EIRMC's existing linear accelerator that has served over 3,000 patients since 2001.

The tear down and installation of the new linear accelerator will take nearly three months, which presented EIRMC with a unique challenge: how to continue providing critical radiotherapy to patients who need it.

RAD Technology Medical Systems constructed a Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) system which includes a linear accelerator and all the features of our current radiotherapy suite. Patients have already started receiving radiotherapy treatment in this temporary facility while EIRMC's new equipment is being installed at the Cancer Center.

Prior to the arrival of RAD Technology's revolutionary technology, the process of updating a linear accelerator would close a facility for several months, forcing patients and doctors to make alternative treatment arrangements. This would be particularly impactful given that EIRMC is the region's only provider of radiotherapy, a treatment given to about 66 percent of all cancer patients.

Debra Barlow, director of Imaging & Radiation Oncology Services, explains: "The challenge was to upgrade our current equipment without displacing our patients. With three months of technical work ahead of us, the impact to the community and cancer patients and their families would have been untenable. EIRMC decided to invest in RAD's TRV services out of our commitment to the region."

The TRV II offers the comforts of a permanent facility. This modular clinic can be installed onsite in a matter of five days. Outfitted with a reception area, waiting room, office space, restroom and a pre-installed linear accelerator, the TRV II is a full-service solution. This TRV has been installed in three cities.
