September 14, 2012 — This week at the American Telemedicine Association’s 2012 Fall Forum, Medweb introduced several new products designed to present first responders and clinicians with immediate access to tools for use in the field and to save precious time in emergency situations, providing new opportunities to improve both overall patient treatment and clinical outcomes.

Medweb’s SmartConsult Telemedicine solution allows specialists (dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, cardiology, dental, neurology, wound care, etc.), general practitioners and nurse practitioners to provide outreach to patients in remote locations, neighborhood clinics in urban areas or within incarcerated populations using Smart Workflows. It provides a comprehensive, computer-based, patient-assessment protocol and a simple interface for uploading images captured with a digital camera or other peripheral device into an electronic consultation. Medweb’s SmartConsult Telemedicine solution includes a specialist screening, diagnosis and treatment workflow to collect specialty-specific patient information.

Medweb Telemedicine Toolkit (MT2) features an all-in-one set of digitally enabled peripheral devices in a small case about the size and weight of a laptop computer. It enables mobile caregivers to conduct and document a full patient consult while maximizing portability. MT2 makes use of the latest advances in optics, LED light sources, digital displays, wireless data transfer and high-resolution imaging. Every device in the kit has a minimum of a two-megapixel imaging capability.

The MT2 includes the following medical devices: Vascular Ultrasound; Vitals Direct Kit (temperature, pulse, oxygenation, blood pressure, glucose, EKG); digital multi-headed scope with the latest detachable lenses that allows users to easily switch between an ophthalmoscope, otoscope, episcope and general exam camera; tablet computer; and solar panel with lithium ion battery.

The MT2 works with Medweb’s m-Health applications on both Apple and Android devices, and Medweb’s Smart Consult Encounter Management software running on a Windows tablet. The kit is designed to upload image data to EMR, PACS or Medweb Cloud Services via 3G or 4G cell phone or Wi-Fi where available. The additional lithium battery pack and solar panel provide up to seven days of regular usage without a separate power source.

And with Medweb’s CameraDirect solution, users can turn any digital camera into a wireless general exam camera. Currently many common telemedicine solutions rely on low-resolution video or HD video cameras that are less than one megapixel. By comparison, widely available digital cameras have upwards of 10MP to 18MP per image. CameraDirect eliminates the need for expensive carts and a tangled mesh of cables. Instead, images and video can be acquired using off-the-shelf high-resolution cameras that transfer images directly to the cloud, eliminating the need for proprietary servers, gateways and associated costs.
