December 28, 2011 — Royal Philips Electronics introduced IntelliSpace PACS 4.4, the newest release in the evolution of the company’s iSite picture archiving and communications system (PACS). The system leverages the latest advances in IT technology and allows for smarter collaboration with the goal of better patient outcomes. It is on display at the 97th annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Nov. 27 – Dec. 2.

The new system provides open access to images and information, enhanced enterprise workflow, new clinical applications, and advanced tools for proactive service and support. It includes features specifically geared to meet the needs of hospitals’ rapidly evolving technological environments. This includes an interoperable, open application programming interface (API) that allows for customization and interfacing with IntelliSpace PACS 4.4-specific data with a hospital’s own advanced networking tools.

In addition, the system’s Advanced Workflow Layer application provides enhanced clinical workflow features and value-added functionality designed to help improve productivity and inter-departmental communication. It also helps facilitate the American College of Radiology (ACR)-mandated peer review process.

The system also offers the convenience and workflow advantages of reading mammography studies on PACS workstations with IntelliSpace PACS Mammography 4.4. It combines the review speed and quality of a mammography workstation with the efficiency of PACS integrated workflow.

There are several other new features, including:

  • IntelliSpace PACS Federation allows users to view other IntelliSpace PACS archives, or gain access to a disparate PACS, in order to present reports and images to the clinician with a view of a patient’s imaging history;
  • Advanced visualization enhances productivity while increasing clinical confidence. There are also optional applications that provide support for a range of medical specialties and modalities;
  • Expanded suite of clinical applications – The system features a full set of optional multi-modality applications; these can help improve clinical workflow and communication and increase diagnostic confidence for radiologists and clinicians. Cardiology, neurology, oncology, musculoskeletal, gastroenterology and digestive diseases are among the clinical application areas supported.

The interoperability features of the system include vendor neutral archive (VNA) support. For customers seeking to add a VNA solution, Philips has entered into a reseller agreement with Acuo Technologies, a provider of clinical record image archiving, migration and intelligent routing. This enables Philips to offer Acuo’s VNA with IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 in North America.

The capabilities of IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 are enhanced by enabling customers to leverage their own infrastructure to transport, store, track and retrieve digital images. Acuo’s services also enable a seamless data transition for instances in which IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 replaces a hospital’s existing PACS.
