August 23, 2007 – Royal Philips Electronics announced it received the Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award, recognizing the Philips IntelliVue Clinical Information Portfolio (ICIP).
ICIP was distinguished for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. ICIP helps reduce transcription errors, support real-time clinical decisions and simplify workflow by integrating important data from the care cycle into the patient record.
Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company, utilizes its team of industry experts, consultants, market analysts and research executives to continuously monitor and analyze several marketplace disciplines, including healthcare and medical devices.
“Frost & Sullivan recognizes Philips as a leader in integrated clinical data solutions, as the company consistently raises the bar for others in this field to follow,” said Frost & Sullivan research analyst Mike Arani. “We chose Philips for this award after conducting in-depth interviews with market participants, analysis of market share and revenue and extensive secondary research of proprietary data in order to identify leaders and best practices in the industry.”
In caring for patients, hospitals rely on data from disparate systems – from patient demographics to discharge notes and lab results to vital signs. Philips addresses this challenge and delivers clinical clarity through ICIP and its first application, Critical Care. Representing the evolution of CareVue Chart, this solution centralizes patient data from the bedside devices and core hospital information systems so clinicians have access, anywhere to the information.
“ICIP complements the enterprise’s healthcare information systems and leverages patient data from throughout the hospital, empowering organizations to provide superior patient care, as well as facilitate collaboration amongst internal teams and with external partners,” said Deborah DiSanzo, senior vice president of Patient Monitoring for Philips Medical Systems. “Having a clear path to clinical care planning, and a clear vision of the future, allows healthcare facilities to achieve a sharp picture of throughput and regulatory compliance and have a powerful impact on day-to-day patient outcomes.”
The Frost and Sullivan award focuses on ICIP’s clinical advisory engine – containing applications that combine critical clinical information from all sources of patient data – which is intended to support clinical decision making, care management and compliance with evidence-based care guidelines.
As ICIP Critical Care manages disparate patient data (including vital signs, lab results, medications, and demographics), its engine performs sophisticated calculations to clarify subtle changes in patient status. Clinical advisories may be based on the presence or level of one parameter or on a complex of parameters whose interactions clinicians may not anticipate. For example, a decreased O2 saturation level for a patient on a ventilator may not be a concern on its own. However, the clinician may be concerned if the patient’s oxygenation index (OI) increases, so ICIP Critical Care can immediately calculate the OI from blood gas measurements and ventilator settings and generate a clinical advisory if it has increased.
The application also helps to simplify the presentation of data so that clinicians can focus on patient care. Certain clinical advisories include a refractory period during which the same conditions will not trigger another advisory, thereby avoiding repetitive notifications. Once a clinical advisory is generated, it prompts a caregiver to acknowledge it, promoting a timely response.
The Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards will be formally presented at the 2007 Growth Excellence Awards Banquet Sept. 17, in Monterey, Calif.
