October 29, 2007 - Lake Hospital System today said it has invested in VaproSure Room Sterilizer technology, giving the hospital system a new weapon in the war against hospital-acquired infections.
Developed by the STERIS Corp., the company says VaproSure Room Sterilizer is the first product of its kind for the healthcare market.
Lake Hospital System is the first community hospital in the nation to purchase the equipment that can sterilize all of the exposed surfaces in a room. It utilizes Vaprox Sterilant to create a dry sterilization vapor that inactivates the full spectrum of biological contaminates on dry, pre-cleaned, exposed, porous and non-porous surfaces within a sealed hospital room. The technology is recognized as a broad-spectrum sterilant, meaning it can destroy spores, bacteria, fungi, and viruses to prevent hospital acquired infections.
“This is a significant public health problem and one that has the potential to become even more menacing," said Carol Cunningham, M.D., EMS medical director for Lake Hospital System and state medical director for the Ohio Department Of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Medical Services. “As germs become more insidious, it’s critical that we have the technology to address them. “
Under a special EPA exemption, STERIS’ Vaprox technology was used to successfully treat the mail facilities of both the U.S. General Services Administration and the Department of State after their contamination during the October 2001 biological attacks.
