February 29, 2008 - The Fujitsu PalmSecure PC Log-In Kit provides secure authentication for clinicians to enter electronic medical records using a biometric scan of their palm.

With the passage of the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), hospitals and other medical organizations are required to use two or more forms of authentication in order to access EMRs.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. demonstrated its new PalmSecure PC Log-In Kit at HIMSS. The kit provides a fast and secure way to access highly sensitive patient information for healthcare professionals. It is composed of the PalmSecure authentication sensor embedded into a PC mouse, which captures an image of the user’s palm vein, and OmniPass Windows Log-in and Single Sign-On software which eliminates tedious password entry for Windows sessions and password-protected applications.

PalmSecure generates a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users’ palm vein patterns. It is more reliable and easier to use than alternative biometric devices, enabling access to PCs and patient records at medical facilities to become more secure, accurate and efficient.

The Carolinas Healthcare Systems in Charlotte, NC, recently deployed the system.
