January 23, 2009 – Next Wed., Jan. 28, a group of radiation oncology providers, manufacturers and patient groups will host an educational forum focused on one of the least understood cancer treatments: radiation.

This inaugural Capitol Hill forum will feature Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) discussing her experience as a breast cancer patient treated with radiation and Rep. Parker Griffith (D-AL), the first radiation oncologist elected to Congress. In addition, Rep. Myrick's radiation oncologist will explain how and why radiation treatment destroys tumor cells.
The event will include an expert from the American Cancer Society highlighting the benefits radiation treatment provides to cancer patients. A National Cancer Institute official will also demonstrate how investments in cancer research and cutting edge technology are increasing the efficacy of radiation treatment, while minimizing side effects.
The forum will take place in room HC-8 of the U.S. Capitol from Noon – 1:30 p.m. ET.
