January 7, 2009 - St. Luke’s Hospital, with the largest radiotherapy department in the Republic of Ireland, recently purchased 11 of Orfit Industries’ positioning and immobilization systems for use with their new Elektra Synergy Linear Accelerators.
St. Luke’s selected Orfit’s immobilization systems to enhance patient comfort, which can reduce movement and increase the precision of radiation delivery. Although the hospital primarily sought a belly board for pelvic patients, the hospital chose a variety of Orfit’s systems for their precise immobilization, patient comfort and interchangeable parts.
Orfit Industries America, established in the United States in 2003, is actively translating this and other successes to the U.S. market where they are expecting to see continual growth in 2009.
According to St. Luke’s Hospital, it selected Orfit’s solution because it provide patient comfort, there is less movement during therapy and the patient positioning is very reproducible. In addition, the system’s full-length, carbon-fiber base-plate can be kept on the treatment couch without changing the cushion format. The cushions can be switched quickly and are easy to clean. The refinements in immobilization made possible by the Orfit solution ensure minimal movement of less than 2 mm, which is essential to the success of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) procedures.
