Siemens now has a works-in progress research portal for clinical research and hypothesis validation, enabling collaborative research in knowledge discovery. The system connects to multiple information systems, extracts data, supports querying of cohorts, implements guidelines, and allows for data mining and algorithm development, including third party application integration. The portal allows researchers to:
- Manage and store research data, including images, genomics, proteomics, and clinical data
- Combine patient data from multiple disparate sources including PACS, hospital information systems, lab systems, institution created databases, and in-house document archives
- Design and execute ad hoc queries and drill down results
- Enable efficient hypothesis generation and testing
- Integrate with third party data analysis and statistical tools
- View unified model of data, including both clinical and research data
- Extract data and report for clinical trials (21 CFR Part 11 compliance)
- Support preclinical research
Siemens is developing a works-in progress solution, focusing on patient identification for clinical trials , based on the award-winning REMIND (Reliable Extraction and Meaningful Inference from Nonstructured Data) Platform . The REMIND platform has been developed to extract, integrate and provide reasoning over structured and unstructured patient data, medical knowledge and other information from various sources, both Siemens and non-Siemens.
These capabilities include high-quality searches in unstructured textual documentation such as history and physicals, radiology reports, surgical reports, discharge summaries, clinical notes, and any dictated reports. This is critical, since the important information for patient identification for clinical trials is often found here.
Patient identification for Clinical Trials can be supported in two scenarios:
1) Patient-Centric: A care-giver (physician or nurse) can use this solution to identify the clinical trials for which any given patient may be eligible during a routine patient visit. This scenario may, in the future, may also be supported in “real-time” – i.e., during the patient visit.
2) Trial-Centric: A research coordinator can use this solution to identify all patients that may be eligible for any given clinical trial.
In prior deployments, REMIND improved clinical trial recruitment by a factor of 5 to 20 times when compared with conventional methods .
Siemens also has a radiology information extraction solution for radiology reports, based on the award-winning REMIND (Reliable Extraction and Meaningful Inference from Non-structured Data) Platform . In conjunction with syngo Workflow, the tool provides automatic form completion and extracts specific elements from text reports to help automate the workflow. The benefits include:
Automated workflow
- Automatically fill out forms; increases legibility and visualization
- Performance improvement – completeness verification
- Provides quality statistics
Improved user experience – quicker workflow (online and offline processing)
- Improved performance
- Reduces errors and flags inconsistencies
- Improves accuracy by learning over time
