September 8, 2008- Hologic featured its MammoSite Targeted Radiation Therapy at BIC 2008.
MammoSite places a MammoSite balloon inside the lumpectomy cavity through a small incision in the breast through a catheter. During therapy, a portion of the catheter that remains outside the breast is connected to a computer-controlled High Dose Rate machine that inserts a radiation seed. The treatment lasts five days.
According to five-year data results, MammoSite proved comparable to long-term interstitial brachytherapy and whole breast radiation therapy for both recurrence rates and cosmetic results. All three studies showed the good/excellent cosmetic results above 80 percent.
